About Us – Northern Soul Chip Shop

Welcome to Northern Soul Chip Shop — home of proper British and Irish fish and chips in St Kilda, Melbourne.

We’re a proudly British- and Irish-inspired chippy bringing the taste of a proper chippy tea to Melbourne. With roots in Manchester, UK, and strong Irish heritage, we grew up on fish and chips wrapped in paper, curry sauce on everything, and takeaway that hits you right in the soul.

​

Back in 2012, we couldn’t find anything in Melbourne that truly matched the chip shops we knew and loved back home — so we took the leap. We ditched our day jobs and converted a 1970s caravan into a food truck, determined to recreate the real deal. That little caravan became the foundation of what Northern Soul is today.

​

Fast forward to now, and you’ll find us settled into our own spot in St Kilda, serving up authentic British and Irish takeaway classics made with care, nostalgia and no shortcuts. Our menu features proper fish and chips, Spice Bags, authentic battered sausages, curry sauce, gravy, mushy peas, and plenty more chip shop favourites you’d expect to find back home.

Alongside our classic chippy staples, we’re excited to be reopening The Caravan Club very soon (from next weekend). Operating from our original 1970s caravan, The Caravan Club is where we serve icy cold beers and cocktails as well as weekly rotating specials inspired by British and Irish takeaway classics — bold flavours, proper comfort food, and dishes that always seem to taste better when you’re far from home. You’ll find us at 98 Barkly Street, St Kilda, just behind the shop. Keep an eye on our socials for opening hours and weekly menus.

Music is a huge part of who we are, too. Through our                          project, we turn the chip shop into a live music space when the doors are closed, hosting intimate performances that are shared on YouTube and social media. It’s our way of supporting emerging and established artists while bringing good tunes into the Northern Soul world.
